This privacy policy describes how the “Highlight & Sync” Chrome extension (“Extension”, “we”, “our”) handles user data. By installing and using this Extension, you agree to the terms described in this policy.

1. Data Collection

The Highlight & Sync extension collects and processes the following types of data, only when you explicitly take action (e.g., selecting text and clicking “Save”):

  • Selected Text: Text that you manually highlight and choose to save on web pages.
  • Page URL: The URL of the web page where you save a highlight.
  • Page Title: The title of the web page where you save a highlight.
  • Color Preference: The highlight color you select.
  • Tags and Notes: Any tags or notes you manually add to your saved highlights.
  • Timestamps: The date and time when a highlight is created.
  • Sync Configuration (optional): If you choose to enable sync, the API tokens you provide for Notion or Google Docs integration.

We do NOT automatically collect, scrape, or monitor any browsing data, personal information, or browsing history. We do NOT collect your name, email address, IP address, or any other personally identifiable information.

2. Data Handling and Use

The data collected is used solely for the following purposes:

  • Storing and displaying your saved text highlights within the extension.
  • Re-applying visual highlights when you revisit previously highlighted pages.
  • Syncing your highlights to third-party services (Notion, Google Docs) only when you explicitly configure and enable this feature.
  • Exporting your highlights as a JSON file when you choose to do so.

We do NOT use your data for advertising, analytics, tracking, profiling, or any purpose other than the core functionality described above.

3. Data Storage

  • All highlight data (text, URLs, page titles, colors, tags, notes, timestamps) is stored locally on your device using Chrome’s built-in chrome.storage.local API.
  • Data remains on your device and is NOT transmitted to any server owned or operated by us.
  • Sync configuration tokens (Notion API token, Google Docs access token) are stored locally in chrome.storage.local on your device. These tokens are only used to authenticate with the respective third-party APIs when you initiate a sync.

4. Data Sharing and Third-Party Transfers

  • By default, no data leaves your browser. All data is stored locally.
  • If you choose to enable sync to Notion: Your highlight data (text, URL, page title, color, timestamp) is sent to the Notion API (https://api.notion.com) using the API token you provide. This data transfer is governed by Notion’s Privacy Policy.
  • If you choose to enable sync to Google Docs: Your highlight data is sent to the Google Docs API (https://docs.googleapis.com) using the access token you provide. This data transfer is governed by Google’s Privacy Policy.
  • We do NOT sell, rent, or share your data with any other third parties.
  • We do NOT transmit any data to our own servers.

5. Data Retention

  • Your highlight data is stored locally on your device for as long as you choose to keep it.
  • You can delete individual highlights or clear all highlights at any time through the extension’s popup interface.
  • Uninstalling the extension will remove all locally stored data.

6. User Control and Data Rights

You have full control over your data:

  • View: All saved highlights are visible in the extension popup.
  • Delete: You can delete individual highlights or clear all highlights at any time.
  • Export: You can export all your highlights as a JSON file.
  • Import: You can import highlights from a JSON file.
  • Sync Settings: You can enable, disable, or change sync configuration at any time.

7. Cookies and Tracking

This extension does NOT use cookies, web beacons, or any tracking technologies. We do NOT use Google Analytics or any other analytics service.

8. Children’s Privacy

This extension is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Since we do not collect any personal data from any user, we are compliant with COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act).

9. Permissions Used

The extension requests the following browser permissions:

  • storage: To save your highlights and settings locally on your device.
  • activeTab: To access the currently active tab for highlighting selected text.
  • contextMenus: To provide a right-click menu option for saving highlights.
  • Host permissions for https://api.notion.com/* and https://docs.googleapis.com/*: Used only when you enable sync to send your highlights to these services.

10. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated “Last Updated” date. Your continued use of the Extension after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
